This video explains the basic uses of a map and compass. A boy and his father use a map to locate a new river for fishing by using some of the basic landmarks found on a topographic map. They try to take a shortcut back to their cottage but lose their way without a compass. You then follow them through several hikes with a new Silva compass. There is a good explanation of how a Silva compass should be used. By the end of the film, both father and son are confident in their ability to use a map and compass to find their way through the woods.

Knots I teaches how we use knots (in general) and why they are important. Defines the various types of ropes. Shows two styles of whipping an end. Shows the Square Knot and how to tie it.
Knots II demonstrates how to tie the following knots: Sheet Bend, Sheep Shank, Two Half Hitches, Clove Hitch, Timber Hitch and the Bowline. This program tells where and when to use each of these knots.
Knots III covers four special knots that aren't part of the standard requirements. The Cat's Paw, Fisherman's Knot, Midshipman's Knot and the Packer's Knot are all included.

These are top quality productions and feature "stop action" points in the programs where your boys and girls can explain what they would do next. These are options that you can use if you'd like to. The programs all end with a visual quiz that shows your boys and girls a first aid mistake and asks them to point out what the error is. After a pause, the program continues to show both the mistake and the correct technique.
