For congregations
Your Train.
Your congregation.
Understand the local leadership, age groups, and Christian foundation described by Lutheran Pioneers.
Led locally, supported nationally
Your congregation and pastor direct the Train. The national organization provides materials and services for Trains and Districts and plans national events for those who wish to take part. Its suggested methods are guidance, rather than a single required way of running every local group.
The Trainmaster and leaders
Every Train must have a primary contact, called the Trainmaster. This adult may be male or female, oversees the Train, and serves as the organization’s contact. The Trainmaster may also be a leader.
Additional leaders and a backup are recommended. The number of leaders should fit the size and needs of the Train.
Which boys can take part?
The program is for boys from kindergarten through high school, rather than preschool children. A new or restarted Train may choose the age groups it serves based on its leaders and families.
For kindergarten through second grade, contact the national office for materials that are not on the website.
A ministry and an outreach opportunity
Only WELS/ELS congregations may host a Train, and only WELS/ELS members may serve as leaders. Any boy may be a member of a Train.
The program aims to reduce the time demands on leaders, encourage parental involvement, and offer learning that interests boys while remaining true to God’s Word. Sharing the Gospel belongs in every meeting and event.
Working alongside Lutheran Girl Pioneers
A congregation may have a Boy Pioneer Train and a Lutheran Girl Pioneer caravan. Where leaders or children are few, the local groups may share some activities. The source guide states that girls cannot participate in Boy Pioneer district or national events, and boys cannot participate in Girl Pioneer district or national events.

Meeting frequency and format depend on the availability of leaders and boys. The original guide describes self-paced learning primarily for third grade and older, with adult help for younger participants.
Ask the office about the current learning system and age-appropriate materials for your Train.
